B.Sc Chemistry
About the Department
The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1972, offering under-graduate program in chemistry with the medium of instruction both in English and Tamil. Around 64 students are enrolled in the UG program every year. It became a post graduate department in the year 2012 and research department in 2014. Every year, 26 students are enrolled in post graduate program including both male and female students. From the year 2024, female students are also admitted in under graduate program.
To encourage students in research activities, the Department provides an opportunity to the post graduate students to get involved in project work in the fourth semester under the supervision of teaching faculty. University of Madras has recognized five faculty members of the Department as research supervisors in chemistry. Since the inception, 13 research scholars had completed their doctorate degree in our department. Presently, five research scholars are pursuing research program in the department and one student has completed Ph.D. program. For motivating students in the field of research, seminars and conferences are organized regularly, focusing on recent trends in the research field of chemistry inviting researchers, academicians, scientists from national and state higher education and research institutions.

Eligibility for the Course:
Candidates seeking admission to the First year of B.Sc., Chemistry Course shall be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations (with physics and chemistry as subjects) conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereof by the Syndicate of the University of Madras.
Candidates seeking admission to the First year of M.Sc., Chemistry Course shall be required to have passed the B.Sc., Chemistry Degree offered by any college or a University recognized by the UGC.
Candidates seeking admission to Ph.D., (Full-Time) Course shall be required to have passed the M.Sc., Chemistry Degree (or Equivalent) offered by any college or a University recognized by the UGC with at least 55% Marks.
Candidates seeking admission to Ph.D., (Part-Time) Course shall be required to have passed the M.Sc., Chemistry Degree (or Equivalent) offered by any college or a University recognized by the UGC with at least 55% Marks. The candidate should be a regular (permanent) teacher working in a university department or in an affiliated college under the University of Madras.
