About the Department

The Department of Zoology was established in the academic year 1980–1981 with an initial sanctioned intake of 20 students, which has increased to 30 as of now. The department currently offers instruction in both English and Tamil medium simultaneously.

In 1996, the department was upgraded to a research department with the introduction of the Ph.D. program, through which 91candidates have  awarded their doctoral degrees. Subsequently, in the academic year 2013–2014, a postgraduate program in Zoology was introduced   and it continues to function effectively with a student strength of 26   by a dedicated staff of 11 faculty members.

To nurture scientific aptitude among students, the department is equipped with well-established laboratories featuring modern infrastructure, enabling a strong research-oriented learning environment. Furthermore, the department houses a well-stocked library with approximately 2,500 books, enriching students’ knowledge and equipping them with latest techniques, innovations, and research skills.

Eligibility for the Course Admission

UG – Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology 

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed the Higher Secondary Examination (H.Sc. / +2) from a recognized State or Central Board.
  • Subject Requirements:  Zoology and Botany /Biology  as part of their curriculum.

PG – Zoology 

  • Educational Qualification for Admission of PG Degree course: Candidates must have a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Zoology from a recognized university.

Departmental Achievements

  • P. Martin, Associate Professor of Zoology, has received more than 10 Lakhs rupees for a Major Research Project from U.G.C., New Delhi. He also received two student projects from TANSCHE and TNSCST.
  • K. Elumalai, Associate Professor of Zoology, received rupees 12 Lakhs rupees for a Major Research Project from U.G.C., New Delhi, and mentored a Young Scientist Fellowship at a cost of 20 lakhs from DST, New Delhi.
  • S. Winkins Santosh, Assistant Professor of Zoology, has received the Chief Minister Research Grant scheme for the year 2023-2024 for the project entitled, “Screening of Microplastics as Endocrine Disruptors from the Edible fishes of Pulicat lake, Ennore creek, and Adyar Creek and their possible effects on Human Health” at a cost of 27.61 lakhs.
  • The department has produced 91 Ph. D.S, with faculty currently supervising 30 research students, published over 275 research and review articles in national and international journals, and actively serving as doctoral committees as well as editors, reviewers, and resource persons in academic events.
  • Students of the department have successfully pursued higher education and secured reputable positions in their professional fields.

DEPARTMENT OF AQUACULTURE

About the Department: AQUACULTURE

The aquaculture department was started in the academic year 1995 – 1996 with the objective of creating the employment and self-employment opportunities in the field of aquaculture and different aspects of aquaculture by giving both theory and practical subject knowledge on aquaculture profession.

M.Sc. aquaculture program imparts scientific and entrepreneurship knowledge on aquaculture industry with developing and disseminating recent technologies undergoing periodical field visits and industrial training to enhance the employment opportunities among youth and to generate more foreign exchange.

Since aquaculture program is equivalent to professional courses, 100% placement can be achieved by on campus and off campus interviews. The students will be well versed with advanced techniques in aquaculture activities after completion of the program, which will provide research opportunities both in India & abroad and self-employ
