About the Department
The Department of Mathematics, one of the oldest and most esteemed departments of the college, was established in 1967 with the introduction of its Undergraduate (UG) programme in both Tamil and English Medium. Since its inception, the department has upheld a strong tradition of academic excellence and has played a pivotal role in promoting the study of mathematical sciences. Over the years, it has grown significantly, fostering intellectual curiosity and equipping students with strong analytical, logical, and problem-solving skills essential for academic and professional success.
In response to evolving academic demands and the increasing need for advanced studies, the department introduced its Postgraduate (PG) programme in 2005 as a self-financing course. Recognizing its academic value and potential, the programme was converted into a fully government-funded course in 2006. This transition has greatly enhanced opportunities for students to pursue higher education and engage in advanced learning across various domains of mathematics. The department is also actively taking steps to further expand its academic horizon and is in the process of developing into a full-fledged PG and Research Department in the near future.
The department is supported by a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members who are actively involved in teaching, research, and academic development. Their scholarly contributions include the publication of more than 40 research papers in reputed national and international journals, along with the authorship of over 30 books covering diverse areas of mathematics. These accomplishments reflect the department’s strong commitment to academic excellence and research advancement.
The alumni of the department serve as its proud ambassadors, holding respectable and influential positions across India and abroad. Their achievements are a testament to the quality of education and guidance imparted by the department. To further support student success, the department provides effective coaching and mentoring, enabling students to excel in highly competitive examinations such as NET, SET, and GATE.
In addition to academic rigor, the department places strong emphasis on the holistic development of students. It actively promotes value-based education and encourages participation in extracurricular activities, including NCC, NSS, academic competitions, and cultural events. Eligibility for the course
For Under Graduate (UG): Candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (+2) or an equivalent examination, ideally with Mathematics as a subject, from a recognized board or university.
For Post Graduate (PG): Candidate who has passed a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from a recognized University.
