About the Department
The Department of History was established in the year 1969. The college expanded its academic offerings by introducing undergraduate courses in the year 1972. Postgraduate and part-time Ph.D. programmes in the year 2013. The department was further enhanced in 2020 with the introduction of a full-time Ph.D. programme, and in 2025, a Tamil-medium section was added under Shift II.
The undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in History are designed to foster analytical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving abilities among students. The curriculum, structured on a learning outcome-based framework, enables students to develop a strong understanding and interpretation of history. It also ensures the maintenance of academic standards through clearly defined graduate attributes, programme outcomes, and course outcomes.
The syllabus provides a comprehensive study of human civilisation across different periods, covering national, global, regional, and local histories. It also examines the evolution of political thought and incorporates subaltern perspectives, promoting a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of the past.
The programme actively engages students by introducing them to diverse cultures and encouraging the development of critical thinking, reading, writing, and research skills. This approach enables students to analyse the factors influencing the growth of civilisations while fostering an appreciation for diversity and pluralism.
The course offers a strong foundation for a wide range of career opportunities, including roles as historians, archaeologists, curators, archivists, civil servants, educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs. It emphasises an interdisciplinary approach through ancillary papers, along with skill-based courses and internship opportunities that enhance employability and entrepreneurial skills.
Over the years, the department has produced accomplished alumni who have distinguished themselves as historians, civil servants, professors, police officers, journalists, and entrepreneurs.

Eligibility for the course
Candidates for admission to the first year of the Degree of B.A. Historical Studies shall be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereto by the Syndicate of the University of Madras.
Candidates for admission to the first year of the Degree of M.A. Historical Studies shall be required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 55%.

Achievements
The department organises seminars, conferences, lectures, workshops and many other events.
Kuthuvilakku being lit by the members of the department during the Inauguration
1. The department has organised the Inauguration of the History Association.
2. The department has signed an MoU with Mathura Travel Service (P) Ltd. Through this memorandum, the students get a chance to explore the travel and tourism sector with the guidance of Mathura Travels.
3. The department has signed an MAU with the University of Kelaniya, Dalugama, Sri Lanka. A one-week International Collaborative Seminar Series on “Social issues and challenges in current scenario: A Multi-disciplinary approach” was organised by our department, University of Kelaniya and Villupuram Historical Research Centre from 06th to 12th December, 2024.
4. The Madras Day is celebrated annually on August 22nd to commemorate the founding of the city of Madras. Our department annually celebrates Madras Day in August.
5. A one-day National Seminar on “Human Rights and Women Empowerment” was organised by our department.
6. Kalai Thendral competitions have been held by the department.
7. One of our students, Mr. Praveen, has received the Sports Achievement Award for Para-Athletics and has been honoured with a government job.
8. The department has organised the Valedictory of the History Association.
9. The department has produced several doctorates after the completion of their course. Historical Research Centre from 06th to 12th December, 2024.
